Character Name: Renee Corbin, code name "Afterburner"
Series: Marvel Comics OC
Character History: Renee grew up in an abusive household. Her mother had disappeared when she was far younger than she is now (about 5 years old, in fact), and her father Don had not changed a bit in the intervening years. (It's presumed that her mother suffered an injury at her father's hands, and, becoming amnesiac, went on to live a new life under a different name, but Renee is not aware of such. She hasn't got the abilities needed to find out, either.)
The middle child, Renee banded together with Andrew, her elder brother, and Todd, the baby, to watch out for their father's rages and protect each other. It both went better and worse when all three hit puberty and manifested mutant powers. Drew took the name Nightfire because of his fire generation and ties to the Darkforce dimension, Todd became Tiger Fury due to his stripes and claws, and due to her first manifestation being rocket-type flight, Renee chose Afterburner. She later realized that with her powers coming more from kinetics, that might not have been the best choice, but the moniker stuck.
However, his children becoming "freaks" drove Don to new depths of anger and frenzy in his beatings. In a way it was a mixed blessing, because Renee managed to get control over her power of kinetic shielding quickly, so her father simply couldn't hurt her, and she managed to protect her brothers as well. Todd was often away these days, luckily--he had talent in hockey and got busy with practicing at the local ice rink. So he was not there when Don attacked Renee before she could protect herself--and Andrew, having enough, immolated his father in a fit of retributive fury.
Andrew was arrested, of course, prosecuted, and sent to one of the high security prisons in Nevada (The Vault, if familiar with canon). Renee and Todd were going to be remanded to foster care, but the Xavier Institute stepped in and they were taken to the main school in Salem where theylearned to better control their powers. Todd eventually decided to pursue hockey full-time and gained a scholarship to college through that. Renee wasn't sure what she wanted to do, but dabbled in music--drumming was a love of hers that she pursued with some enthusiasm. Still, she didn't skimp on other instruments, and studies like music theory as well.
Then the events of Decimation hit, and Renee helped defend the school to the best of her abilities when the anti-mutant militants attacked. It turned out that Andrew lost his powers in those events, and having been a model prisoner, was released to a parole program. He ended up going to college and learning to be a game programmer. With her brothers finding their way, it was up to her to find hers...
Character Canon Point: After M-Day, but I don't have a specific time when. Just sometime in 2018.
She did get picked up by a very odd train--the Voidtrecker Express--and for a time, went on missions to worlds in...space? the void? It was difficult for Renee to tell. She grew closer to a number of people on the train--Tony Stark, the Tolkien elf Feanor, a Jedi named Cal Kestis, and others as well. She thought the train's claim of "the journey was more important than the destination and the friends you make along the way are the best" (not a direct quote) was kind of hokey, but she's come to realize it may have had a point...
Personality: Renee does her best to be a tough rebel, self-contained and self-sufficient, but she ends up caring too damn much. She'll be a flippant teenager and something of a pain in the ass (of the "I can do this myself variety), but if someone really needs help, in any fashion, she'll be willing to stand up. Renee had to learn to take care of herself at a young age--that doesn't mean most other people should have to do the same--especially those younger than she is. (She was overprotective of her baby brother, too...yeah, it annoyed him.)
She has a bit of a penchant for heckling and giving people crap, but it's intended to be mostly harmless. Maybe she watched too much of the Muppet Show as a kid and had a fondness for Statler and Waldorf...still, if someone told her that she was hurting their feelings? Renee would probably stop. She's also just fine with getting as good as she gives. (It actually tends to make her like people better...)
Renee's learned to control her powers over years' worth of trial and error, but she still remembers the days where she had little control, and reacts accordingly in company. She walks carefully, exhibits a lot of self control when she loses her temper (usually trying to swallow her anger down), and tries to be supremely careful, not wanting to be too careless with her more-than-human strength. But she also has no problems exhibiting it in ways where it would actually be useful, either.
She tries to pretend that her father's death did not affect her at all--she forgave Andrew for his place in it, and Don Corbin was not a good man by any means, but--he was still her father. She feels guilty and isn't quite sure how to work past that, so she represses that, too, but she still has the occasional nightmare about it.
Since Renee hasn't found a real path in life beyond "being a mutant", she sometimes struggles with feelings of inadequacy. She's smart and clever, but she hasn't tried to pursue any actual college education, yet, unlike her brothers. She's a bit more inclined to actually use her mutant powers, but she's not entirely sure she wants to embrace the superhero lifestyle yet.
CRAU: Through her time on the Voidtrecker, Renee's learned that friends and family--even if they're just chosen family--is more important. That it's good to have someone at your back. She's learned to be more trusting, and not just shove people away arbitrarily.
Abilities: I link because otherwise I'll be here forever...

She is a basic hand-to-hand combatant, however; Renee tends to use her mutant powers in a fight. Renee had learned American Sign Language prior to her time on the train, and only progressed in skill in it when the strange being known as Prisoner arrived on the train--he literally could not speak and so she taught him how to sign.
Six Items:
-A purple hoodie with a green train logo on the left breast. It's also embroidered with an eight-pointed star hidden beneath the hood (Feanor's symbol).
-the power-inhibiting bracelet that Hank McCoy gave her
-costume--it's unstable molecules, mostly that means it's unlikely to be entirely destroyed and she can make it look like regular clothes.
-a pair of Ahead Classic 2B drumsticks
-a New York Islanders jersey (Todd plays for them)
-a pair of Doc Martens
Character Samples:
Sample 1: having a chat with Big Green
Sample 2: [The redhead clicks the fluxphone's camera on, a big grin on her face as her brows fly up. She's twirling one of her drumsticks between her fingers idly.]
So I hear there might be a club opening up? Anyone know any bands looking for a drummer? I mean, I can play guitar too, but I haven't got a guitar of my own to use--though once I get a job, I plan to start saving up for one! [Also read: she doesn't want to spend her stipend all in one place, either.]
Cookies were great though, my compliments to Jerry. Next time I see the booth open, I gotta stop by with a cup of coffee just for him. One good turn deserves another, and all that, right?
[Renee shoots fingerguns and a thumbs up at the screen, and signs off.]
